FAQ

General Candle Questions:

Q. Why is pure soy wax better than other candle waxes?

A. Soy wax is derived from soybeans which are a natural, renewable source grown in many regions by organic farmers. Soy wax provides a cleaner burn as it doesn’t contain paraffin waxes which are extracts of petroleum and are derived from petrochemicals.

Soy Wax is –

  • 100% Plant-Based!
  • All Natural!
  • Sustainable, Renewable and Biodegradable!
  • Free of animal testing!
  • Free of petroleum products!
  • Free of animal products!
  • Free of insect products!
  • Free of palm oil!

The Manufacturing Process of soy wax is designed to purify the wax, ensuring the removal of any potentially present pesticides, herbicides, or Genetically Modified Materials (GMM)*. This Process has been verified and confirmed to be 100% effective by accredited third party Laboratory Analysis for the wax we use in the manufacturing process of Ivory and Oak candles.

Q. What does FSC certified wood mean?

A. FSC (The Forest Stewardship Council) is an International, not-for-profit organization. FSC certified wood means the wood comes from sustainably managed forests and helps to protect forest growth.

Q. Why does the surface of my Ivory and Oak candle look discoloured or odd?

A. As soy wax is a 100% natural substance it can easily be affected by the environment. This includes being left in the sun and some ingredients within fragrance oils.

Frosting or crystallizing may also occur on the surface of your candle. These are the common terms for “polymorphism” and describe the white coating that can appear on soy candles. Frosting is a perfectly natural effect of using soy wax and is unique to vegetable waxes, especially soy. All soy waxes frost to some degree and it is a sign that you have purchased a 100% natural soy wax candle.

None of these natural occurrences will affect the burning or scent of your candle.

Candle Care:

Q. How can I get the most out of my candle?

A. The first thing you want to do is make sure your wick is the proper length. Before burning, trim your wick to the proper length, cotton wicks should be 1/4” in length and wooden wicks should be 1/8” in length. Wick trimmers work great for this, by cutting a clean cut and keeping the integrity of the wick. When lighting your candle for the first time, it is crucial to burn the candle until the top layer of wax completely melts. This will allow for an even burn throughout the candles life and help avoid tunnelling. This may take 2-4 hours! Trim the wick before every use to maintain an even burn.

Q. Why is the first burn the most important?

A. During the first burn, it is crucial to let the whole top of the candle melt before blowing it out. This will prevent tunnelling and will create an even burn for the duration of the candle.

Q. My candle is tunneling, why is this happening?

A. Tunneling will occur when you have not left the flame of your candle burning long enough to create a melt pool that reaches the edge of the jar (this can take 3-4 hours).

If this occurs do not trim your wick but leave it longer to create a larger flame on your next burn to allow the wax pool to reach the edge of the jar.

Alternatively, molten wax is soft so when warm you can use a blunt object to push the wax edge in to the pool to melt it (also try a hair-dryer or tip the jar on it’s side towards the side of jar with the excess wax that requires melting. Keep moving the jar around to soften this wax and then push down in to the melt pool.)

After the next burn be sure to trim your wick to 1/8 – ¼”

Q. Are there any safety tips I should be aware of?

A. Candles can be a serious fire hazard if not used properly. The following tips are to help minimize your risk when burning your candles in your home.

  • NEVER leave a burning candle unattended.
  • ALWAYS place candles on an even surface.
  • BURN AWAY from things that can catch fire (like bedding, curtains, decorations, and clothing).
  • KEEP burning candles in a well-ventilated area and out of reach of children and four legged friends.
  • FOLLOW the burning instructions on the caution sticker on your candle.
  • SIT BACK, relax and enjoy!
